last post

well I made it home safe and sound... such a long flight!

I am glad to be home with my family. I really missed everyone....also felt good to tear out of the driveway in my car. lol

I'm also bummed... and really upset... my super nice camera is MIA. I'm pretty sure I left it in the airport in Buenos Aires. Luckily most of my pictures have been uploaded, but it was only six months old. UGH. My friend in Buenos Aires called the airport to see if they had it. They said it takes 48 hours to process lost and found items. so please everyone say a prayer that there is one honest Argentine out there who turned it in. I'm really doubting it though...

going to bed!!! jetttttt lag!

last night here!

So I can't believe it, but it's my last night in Buenos Aires. I cannot believe how fast the time has gone. And let's hope the ash holds off... flights in and out were canceled last night. but as of now, it looks like I should be able to leave.

Trying to think of what adventures I've had in the past several days that I can write about...

I did really well in my class. Got a 9 out of 10 (that's the grading system in Argentina). I'm pretty proud of myself. =) It was a lot of hardwork, but definitely worth it in the end.

My roommate is here. I really like her. I wish she had been here during June! I could've had a buddy to hang out with. she's very sweet and nice - which is a good thing because I know Gloria was also worried. She's had some bad experiences with previous students staying here. But it looks like she got a good one!!

Thursday night we had our farewell dinner. It was sad to say bye to everyone.

Last night a group of girls went to a jazz club. I really had a great time! Our waiter was absolutely hilarious. He tried to get my friend Carolyn's number... and then tried to kiss her when we left. I was crying I was laughing so hard.

I also finally got to try some really good wine. I've never been a fan of red wind, but I LOVE malbec. definitely going to buy some when I get home!

Today I went to Uruguay. Wooot for another stamp in my passport. It was absolutely GORGEOUS!!! Although, i quite literally froze my butt off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT WAS SO COLD!!! I was dressed warm enough, but the girls I went with did not dress warm enough. So we didn't do too much.... I'm glad my parents taught me to be prepared!!!

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone and being home. I'll post again if flights don't go out tomorrow, but I don't think that will happen!!

nothing new... just felt like posting

well, I'm sitting here enjoying a hot cup of tea and listening to a thunderstorm roll in. Sad to say... but I am glad it's raining. Maybe it'll clear some of the dog crap off the sidewalks. lovely thought, huh??? but after almost a month of constantly watching where I walk in fear of smelly shoes, a good rain is a welcomed thought.

I'm also hoping my tea brings some clarity of mind for my test tomorrow. The Spanish language is pretty complex... especially once you start getting into the past/subjunctive tenses. There are a lot of concepts that aren't inherently found in English... this makes test taking especially difficult. I've spent the last two hours scouring my notes and workbook in hopes that maybe something sunk in... part of me thinks it did... the other part is saying no... and then a third part is saying... well, just do your best. (I think that's what my mom would say too!) I suppose I'll find out tomorrow...

I'm also enjoying my last night alone in my room. Katherine from Wisconsin shows up tomorrow. I've never been one for sharing my space... especially with someone from the female gender - it never goes well... but I suppose I'll try to be on my best behavior for the three days I have left.

off to study some more...

CONGRESO... and mental shutdown

well.... my days here are slowly winding down. I've loved my time here, but I'm definitely getting to the point where I'm ready for normality and my life back home. Today was especially rough... I really think my brain is running on empty. Five hours of class is killin' me. My professor today seriously talked AT us for five hours today... as well as scribbling in Spanish on the blackboard. We didn't really engage in the language or talk much... by the time 3 pm hit... I was toast. I couldn't function. I felt like I was a babbling moron. I came home and slept. Gloria was so sweet and made me some tea which also helped a lot. I'm really going to miss her. She's become my Argentine Grandma. She also told me that she was really going to miss me and that it had been such a pleasure having me in her home and that I was a wonderful person. I almost cried!!!

I only have one more actual day of class. Thursday and Friday are final exams. One written and one oral. It's going to be intense!!!!

I also have a girl who is coming for the next term coming.... she will be staying in my room with me. Not very excited about that, but oh well. It's only a few days and I plan on staying as busy as possible in those few days. That includes a trip to Uruguay on Saturday. Should be a lot of fun.

The only really fun piece of news I have.... is that I saw the Congress building on Monday. It was a holiday here which meant that the city was super peaceful. The weather was also beautiful. It also looks like the volcano is calming down... although the ash is circling the globe a second time and disrupting flights in Australia. Hope it clears up by Sunday.

hitting the hay soon.... still feeling drained after my long day of class....

Sin Palabras...

hello blog readers!

I have returned safe and sound from Las Cataratas Iguazu! I would try to describe them to you, but seriously I don't have the words in Spanish or English to give them justice. I will post a few pics on here... there are more on facebook or I'll be happy to show them to you when I get home. If you have the chance to visit them... DO IT. It's 100% worth the trip down here.

Getting to the falls was quite an adventure. Here in Argentina, long-haul buses are a very common form of transportation. The bus terminal was huge... bigger than the airport. But let me say this. IT WAS TERRIFYING. I pretty much had to drug myself to sleep... so two tylenol pm's later... I was finally asleep. Only to be awoken by an insanely loud thudding noise and the bus shaking... then a horrid burning smell. I guess we lost a wheel or tire or something in the middle of the night in the middle of NOWHERE, Argentina. My seat was on the top of the bus right by the stairs... all I saw was the crew running back and forth screaming in spanish and cops outside directing traffic... took two hours to get it fixed. later on that morning after breakfast, we pretty much swerved off the road. Needless to say... my seatbelt was on at all times... and I'm glad i didn't die!

after we got off that bus and onto our private tour bus, we almost got into ANOTHER accident... people here drive like maniacs...

We also had a traditional BBQ at a yerba mate farm. soooooo yummy! You couldn't be a vegetarian and live in this country... just saying!!!

our hotel was nice. very "jungle" like... but the dinner and breakfast buffets were sooo awesome. I made friends with the waiters. =) It was also nice to get to know some of the other guys and gals in my program. We all stayed up late and had some drinks on saturday night. Also met a random Argentine guy who came and joined our group. He was very brave to come join us and speak English!

we also got to see the point where Brazil and Paraguay meet Argentina. There were monuments on the shore of the river representing each country. very cool!

Sunday we went to visit a native tribe... I don't know how I felt about it... I felt very sad and almost exploited, and the tribe definitely was too... It was interesting to see, but it is not something I would've done if I hadn't been forced to.

I was very glad to fly home yesterday and not get on another bus. It also looks like flights are mostly back to normal... so I should be able to fly out on sunday. woo! I miss everyone and really look forward to being home.

a request?!

so I was told... that people are reading my blog!!! AND they're requesting more! (this is for you Julie!)

Things down here are pretty good... The stupid volcano is still wreaking havoc on the airport. I think international flights are taking off... I'm a bit worried about my trip to Igazu this weekend. I'm hoping we can fly back. Will keep you updated!

I also realized I forgot to post about my experience at the hospital. Nothing major happened... I just was having a major issue in my left eye. So my professor told me to have it checked out. I just had an irritation in the second layer of my eye in the corner.... i was supposed to go back but it cleared up in a day. But hospitals here are weird!!! they have numbers and room numbers.... and your number "dings" when the doctor is ready to see you... so weird!!!

Over the weekend, Michaela Ruthie and I went to the San Telmo fair. It's basically 10 blocks of STUFF. There are street performers and food and stuff to buy. lots of fun!!

Monday I got to hang out with my friend Tony who lives here. I stayed out entirely too late... I'm getting too old for that!!!! It was fun though. We went to see the Hangover 2 (or que paso ayer 2 LOL) It was in English with spanish subtitles. There were several awkward moments... where I laughed and no one else did OR I laughed before everyone else did (they were still reading the subtitles) We also got drinks at a very cool bar by my house.

Today Michaela and I went to El aterno bookstore. It's sooooo beautiful. It's in an old theater in downtown Buenos Aires. I could sit in there all day!!! oh and I MIGHT have had a very delicious cafe calypso (coffee and baileys)

Walking home the other day... there was a random dance/drum party in the party by my house. very random but very cool. It was a big group of kids dancing. SO adorable.

I leave for Iguazu tomorrow! yea!!! people in my class went last weekend and they said it's UNBELIEVABLE! I really look forward to seeing it. Just hope we can get back!!!!

Miss everyone so much. Also looking forward to getting back to the states.... having some space... not being hot and sweaty and cold all at the same time... and not being shoved on the subway.

been busy!

so my original idea of writing everyday certainly hasn't been working. It's a combination of being too busy OR not having anything exciting to write about. I suppose I could write about what I'm learning in class, but that'd be incredibly boring to read about!

I'm trying to think what I've been up to!

Thursday we went to Plaza de Mayo to see Las Madres de la Plaza de Mayo march. it was pretty incredible... pics!

after the plaza we went to Catedral Metropolitiana. It's a very beautiful temple-like church. The tomb of General San Martin lay here. He is the "liberator" of Argentina and fought the war to gain their independence. We got to see the elite guards "change". very cool! more pics!!

After the catedral, we went to one of the oldest and most famous cafes in Buenos Aires. Cafe Tortoni. It was pretty damn good!!!! yet another pic! (that's my friend Bethany with me!)

Today Michaela and I went back to the Recoleta fair. I love that place!! I got a few more gifts and bought another hat from the cute little old lady who knitted my pink one. (she remembered me! lol!) We also went down to La Boca. It's one of the oldest neighborhoods - VERY touristy. it was a lot of fun... so much to see and do! We walked around for awhile... this area is definitely sketchy so we made sure to stay on the tourist drag and took a taxi there and back. EVEN MORE PICS!

hopefully you noted the curly hair! seriously i've given up fighting the stupid humidity here. I can't keep my hair straight. so it's going curly.

my only other news to report is... laundry here is crazy weird. you take your laundry and have a little chinese lady wash it for you.... it weirds me out having some random person see my dirty clothes... that and my pants were LITERALLY as tall as she was... I feel like an amazon in this country. no one here is as big as I am. even the guys. if they are tall, they probably weigh about 120. yeahh..... it's quite disturbing for me.... and quite painful for the old self esteem. just thankful I don't live here all the time.

anywho. off to bed. I hope someone is actually reading this!

looking like a tourist!

Today... I saw A LOT.

After five insanely long hours of class, Michaela, Daniel and I set out to explore some sights.

First stop was the Obelisco. This is a historic monument located on 9 de Julio (which is the widest street in the world. go go useless facts!) here are some pics:

After that we walked to the Plaza de Mayo. This is the place in Buenos Aires where people "fight the power" and hold protests... march... etc. There had been some kind of protest today because when we got there, there were about 75 armed police officers patrolling. this is also where las madres de los desaprecidos march every thursday. We are going there with my program on Thursday.I can't wait to see it. By the plaza is la casa rosada. This is the president's house and it's literally PINK. (rosada = pink) It even has pink lights at night... crazy! More pics:

From there... we headed to Puerto Madero. This is the "newest" and most expensive area of town. The most expensive restaurants and apartments are here. It's such a fantastic area... after we crossed the most dangerous street I've ever seen... and fought the plumes of pollution, we hit tranquility! The whole area is along a river... it's really nice. There is also a very cool bridge - La Puente de Las Mujeres (bridge of the women). apparently it swings open when a boat comes. even more pics! (are you sick of them yet??)

As you can see, today I was busy sight seeing... and if you didn't notice... it was stupid cold. I'm really glad I bought a coat and hat. Although the weather thursday and Friday is supposed to be near 70! woot! also, I'm going to buy more hats because it's literally the only way that I don't look like a hot mess. This humidity is killing me!

Two side notes: I saw a dog almost get hit by a car and then a bus... I would've been scarred for life. I also saw what appeared to be some feral children on the subway. they smelled like poop. FABULOUS!

gloves... or a coat

well today was freezing. It rained and was extremely chilly. I feel like such a baby because of the cold. It's not like it doesn't get insanely cold in St. Louis... I dunno, the cold here isn't typical cold. It's very damp... and because it's winter the sun doesn't ever warm the earth... and there's lots of shadows... so yeah I couldn't get warm today. so I ended up dropping 468 pesos (114 US) on a coat. I hope I actually use it.. I was looking at the weather and it's supposed to be a bit warmer. Regardless I don't think "warmer" will happen... so the coat will probably get used. and if it doesn't... it'll get used in about 5ish months back home.

class was decent today. just so long to sit there... and my brain can literally only process spanish for so long before I just shut down...

my only other comment before I log off... as cool as Argentina is... and as unpatriotic as I am... i'm really glad I live in the US... just saying. =)

short post today... didn't do much.

Miss everyone. free to call me! =)

Tigre and the Fair!

Well it's been a fun last few days.

saturday I had a group trip to Tigre. It's the largest river delta in the world. I rode the train north out of Buenos Aires for about 45 minutes. It was so peaceful and COLD! We took a boat ride around the rivers in the area and got to see the vacation homes in the area. It's quite an experience... if you stay in these homes you can't drive to them - you take a water bus. There are supermarket boats, gas boats, school boats... it's pretty cool. After the boat ride we went to visit a local market/fair. there was SO much stuff... I was overwhelmed.

today I went to the Recoleta Fair with two girls from my program. It's basically a giant fair with tons of local artists and handmade crafts. I bought quite a few things... My favorite is a picture... it's of a group of dogs (from a dog walker) that are tied to the fence of a really cool building... it's so cool. I especially love it because there's a boxer who's woofing something. haha i really had a good time. http://www.buenosairesfoto.blogspot.com that's the link to the artist's photos... mine is the first one that is posted! yea! the rest of his work is really cool too.

The weather here is getting reallyyyyy chilly. I think I'm gonna buy some gloves..

tonight I'm just vegging... did some homework... I'm getting ready for a long day of classes tomorrow and i'm sure a busy week of activities.

Posted a couple pics from yesterday. again, I look like crap. I think I'm half frozen.

always an adventure

well, so far... everyday here is an adventure. Usually one that involves copious amounts of walking. I'm pretty sure I'll be about ten pounds lighter and need a month to recover.

Yesterday I went to the Recoleta cemetery to visit Evita Peron's grave. Then went to the Evita Museum and finally to have dinner with the group from my program. We had empanadas, yerba mate (a traditional tea-like drink), and homemade dulce de leche desserts. (seriously, I'm addicted to dulce de leche. it's pretty amazing) The group watched a movie, but I decided to head home. (I'm old)

Today in class my professor showed a video of a song by an Argentine singer, Leon Gieco called "La Memoria". The song is absolutely beautiful... Even though I can't understand every word, it was so moving... He sings about "Los Desaparecidos" here in Argentina and the repression in other countries around the world. Here in Argentina, over 30,000 people went missing during the dictatorship of the late 70's early 80's. That's an unbelievable number.... It was a horrible time in Argentina... they called it the Dirty War...if you have the time, do some reading on the subject.... you'll be moved to tears.

Here is the link to a similar video that we watched... I couldn't find the actual video, but this one is pretty close.... the song is talking about how wars like this should never be allowed to happen again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JeJS5FtGCw&feature=fvst

on a lighter note... the Subway totally broke down today on my way to class. It was awful... Everyone had to get off and then CRAM into the next train. I basically said "F**K THIS" and took a cab. Well, there weren't any cabs empty.... so I thought I'd try to walk... yeah.... I was at the 5500 block... and had to go to the 1900 block... lol that wouldn't work. I basically walked until I found an empty cab. I was 45 minutes late to class... for real... I miss my car.

So after that insanity, I decided I needed a taste of America. After class my friend Michaela and I got some starbucks. IT WAS HEAVEN.

Tonight... I'm relaxing at home.

well it was bound to happen

today, I had my first "completely lost" moment. They moved the campus that I have to go to for class... well, I thought "oh I can take the subway. EASY" Well, long story short, I went left when I should've gone right.... wandered aimlessly for over 30 minutes. Thank God people here are super nice and pointed me in the right direction. I was 30 minutes late to class.

I'd also like to add... the train here is absolutely insane. First of all, it's hotter than hell. Second, people literally SHOVE their way on the train. This morning I was in the doorway by a railing and everyone just shoved and pushed me into it. I COULDN'T GO ANYWHERE!!! But they just kept shoving. It was fairly awful. I don't know why I even bothered fixing my hair... I was a hot mess by the time I got to school.

The building our classes are in is realllyyyy beautiful. I guess it's an old house (and by house think mansion) it's really amazing... I'll try to snap some pictures of it tomorrow.

I finally got out and did some exploring today. I went to see the "flower" - a statue given to the city by a French architect. I guess it opens and closes like an actual flower. Its pretty cool. We also stopped by the Museum of Art but they wanted me to leave my backpack at a counter and I Just didn't feel safe doing that. I think we're gonna go back another day (without my backpack).

I'm glad I finally found some people that I can do some exploring with... they want to see lots of the cultural stuff (think nerds). I'm pretty stoked about that. we're already making plans for the week. yea!

ok, off to bed. I literally hurt.

I've attached a pic from today. Please forgive how completely disheveled and messy I look...

hmm... apparently I can speak spanish

Well today was the first day of classes. Well, actually not "class" per se but I went to campus. We had to take a placement test to gauge our level of Spanish. There are four levels: beginner, intermediate I, Intermediate II and advanced. I was stunned that I got placed in intermediate II.That works perfectly for my credits to transfer back to the states.

After the test, we had lunch in a local mall and toured the neighborhood. Pamela, from CEA, told us a lot about the city and the history of Argentina. I, of course, found it very fascinating. Others in my group - not so much! But that's to be expected. I'm a huge nerd afterall.

I took the train home and I found that much easier to handle/navigate. Pretty sure it's going to become my main form of transportation (along with cabs). No me gustan los colectivos. lol

I've also decided that I'm going to make a list of things that I want to see and how to get to them. I need organization! That way I can make sure I get to do stuff while I'm here and that I arrive there safely.

My other decision is to buy a kick ass pair of leather boots. =) Priorities, right?

Off to bed. got a long day of class tomorrow.

primer vino!

Wasn't going to post today, but I can't sleep... feeling anxious about my first time venturing out tomorrow on my own and my first day of class.

Today, I had lunch with my friend Tony who lives here in Buenos Aires. I really had a wonderful time. We talked and talked and talked and I ate entirely too much! I really hope I don't get fat on this trip... I also had my first glass of Argentinian wine. HOLY CRAP it was delicious!

Didn't do much else today... I'm giving myself time to get adjusted still and not overdo it. I figure I have a month to see the sights. Also, I'm here to study spanish! That adventure starts tomorrow. I'm really excited and I hope that I can learn a lot. We shall see!

My last comment to sign off: there is an insane amount of dog crap on the sidewalks here. I was so pissed that I stepped in a giant pile in my brand new sneakers.

Off to bed... stayed up too late as it is!

I'm here... now how the hell do I get around?

Well, I'm here. I made it.

Now, I'm just plain confused. Seriously, this city is a bit overwhelming. There are people everywhere, loud buses, taxis buzzing by, and people driving like complete maniacs.

My host mom, Gloria, is a total sweetheart. So nice and inviting. (and seriously she cooks some amazing food - had homemade flan today) I also met her daughter and grandson today. Thank god her grandson hooked me up to the internet. I think I might die if I didn't have a connection back home. My room/house are different. DEFINITELY not an American home, but I'm not in America. I have my own room upstairs in an attic/loft type area.... I have a TV which is nice.

I think right now my biggest barriers/fears are: getting around, being safe and the language. This place is so confusing... Gloria went with me and thank god. There is no way in hell that I could've found my way. The buses are absolutely terrifying. They barely stop long enough for you to get on... they definitely don't stop long enough for you to pay... then there are hardly enough seats so I had to cling to a pole and pray I didn't die. I honestly think I'm going to walk as much as possible and take the subway. Buses are to be tackled at a later time.

It's hard not to be concerned about safety... all of Gloria's family told me to HOLD TIGHTLY to my purse... not carry money in my purse... and that I have absolutely no business going out after 6 p.m. (dark) All of that was of course followed up by a "oh but you'll be fine!" that isn't very comforting.

They speak about 95 million miles an hour... which causes a very blank stare to form on my face. I must look like a total moron.... I'm hoping that my Spanish kicks into major overdrive soon... or I might be screwed...

my only hope is that things look up from here. I stopped and told myself that I can't do everything on the first day I get here... I need time to adjust and get used to my surroundings. I'm hoping to make friends with people from my program and begin to do some stuff in groups. My program also has a lot of trips planned so I know I'll get to see the city that way too. From there, I just need to grow a pair and do some exploring. That will start tomorrow!

Just trying to take things one day at a time.... It's just not easy being away from everything I know that is familiar. Thoughts and prayers appreciated!!!!

Dallas is not Buenos Aires

Well leave it to St. Louis to ruin my departure to Buenos Aires. It started out with a one hour delay... then from there all hell broke loose. There were horrendous storms pretty much all around St. Louis today. At one point, we were taking shelter in the airport cause a tornado was spotted. Once things somewhat calmed down, we finally boarded the plane... only to sit for an hour and a half while we waited for it to be safe enough to load the baggage.

Four hours after my scheduled departure... we take off.

aaannnnddddd....I missed my flight to Buenos Aires.

So here I sit in the lovely (sarcasm) Baymont Inn and Suites in Dallas, TX. Only positive note: I got on the next flight to Buenos Aires. Bad news: I get to sit at the airport for 7 hours tomorrow.

I keep telling myself that this makes for a good story and an entertaining blog entry... but seriously this sucks. I already had my first emotional breakdown... I'm just trying to stay strong and get through this. Definitely is not the way I wanted this trip to start.

Leaving tomorrow...

Hi everyone!

I've decided to blog my adventures in Argentina! This is the first...

I leave tomorrow and I'm beginning to feel really terrified and excited (all at the same time!) I haven't been away from my immediate family and creature comforts for this long in a VERY long time. I know this trip is going to be worth the pain in my heart, but at the same time it's still difficult to be gone for a month. I know... I know... I can hear everyone saying "oh shut up Hannah! It's only a month!" but things are more complicated when you heart is tied to home.

So that said... I'm all packed and ready to go. Let's hope the weather cooperates tomorrow and my plane can take off. My next update will be from Buenos Aires!

Appreciate the prayers... positive thoughts... etc etc!

xoxo
